Freedom is not the absence of discipline, it only means self discipline instead of forced discipline. Responsibility means the ability to chose our response. Happiness is a voyage and not destination. Love Unconditionally.

Poem by Rabindranath Tagore

Beautiful Poem by Rabindranath Tagore

Go not to the temple to put flowers upon the feet of God,
First fill your own house with the Fragrance of love...

Go not to the temple to light candles before the altar ofGod,
First remove the darkness of sin from your heart...

Go not to the temple to bow down your head in prayer,
First learn to bow in humility before your fellowmen...

Go not to the temple to pray on bended knees,
First bend down to lift someone who is down-trodden. ..

Go not to the temple to ask for forgiveness for your sins,

First forgive from your heart those who have sinned against you.

The Game of Life

The game of Life by swami Tejomayananda (Head of Chinmaya mission world wide)

When you feel hungry you have to eat, no other person can eat for you. When you are sick, if some one else takes medicine, it is of no benefit for you. In the same way you have to live your own life. Other people may help, they may teach you but you have to learn for yourself. In actual life, every person has to live by himself, once this is understood, that to make your life cheerful and happy or miserable and always crying __ both are in your own hands. You have the choice.

You will all agree that you must make your life beautiful and full of laughter, that is why we must make our life a game to be played. To understand how to play the game of life intelligently, we have to see what is a game, what is life, and then come to the actual play

What is a game?

A game is something which is played between two teams. When two parties are fighting, it is a war. In the game, we may oppose but friendship remains, whereas in war there is hatred and destruction.

The same game can be played for fun, for money, for individual fame, for service to people or for national glory. When the game is played for the nation, the individual enjoys, gets name, fame and money and at the same time brings glory to the nation. When the individual plays the same game  only for  money, he may get money but nothing great is achieved. In playing for the higher purpose, the lower ones are always gained.

Why not maximise the achievement and play for the higher purpose?

When we play sometimes we win and some times we lose, when we lose, there is no anger, hatred or jealousy. The captain of the losing team goes and congratulates the opposing team. That is sportsmanship.....

What is Life?

Breathing is a sign of life, but life is not mere breathing or moving about, or responding. Life is series of experiences. To experience there must be two things, the experiencer and the object of experience...the things and beings of the world...In life the game goes on between two parties...me and the world. If you make life a war, it will be your fight against the whole world, make life a game and play it.

Some people say " Eat, drink and be merry---- that is called enjoying life"---- Sounds wonderful but supposing there is nothing to eat and drink...then? Or the food is there but stomach is upset..then..? Or if at such a time you come to know you have failed in your exam! Then the mind goes off. To enjoy food, a simple thing, so many factors are necessary, so such a person cannot be happy all the time. He is sometimes happy and sometimes unhappy.

For some people purpose of life is to earn money....What to do with all the accumulated money..Are people with lot of money happy?

If game of life is played for winning...think can we win every time? When success becomes all important people start cheating.

The game of life can be played for pleasure, for money, for winning but what is the highest purpose? The intelligent way of doing something is when maximum benefit is derived both to the individual and the universe...

Rules of the game

In every game that we play, there are rules. In life also we have rules for everything. There are rules for walking on the road, getting down from a bus, traffic rules, rules for music, dancing, even for science. These laws are made so that life goes on smoothly, for safety and convenience of all and for harmonius living amongst people. The rules by which we play game of life are caled dharama.

If we don't follw traffic rules, there will be accidents, or music rules (tala etc) there will only be some noise. For keeping our body healthy, there are rules for eating, sleeping, exercise, taking bath. It is our duty to keep our body healthy. So the rules for healthy body are called dharma of the ody. If dharma is obeyed there will be no problems. Dharma is of two types----- One to be followed and one to be avoided e.g. the dharma of electricity when followed becomes a blessing, when disobeyed, will be dangerous. The do's and don't when folowed bring peace and fearlessness, when disobeyed cause agitation

Why should we pray? Why not just do good work?

For any good work we require strength and a noble goal or an ideal. Do we have the strength to do good always? For a person, who is  doing good the question arises why should I go on doing good when others are not doing so? Besides all the time we are not able to do good, that requires tremendous strength. In order to avoid getting shaken from the good work we must understand the secret of prayer. For a fan to move it must be connected to the electric supply, we will call electricity source of energy, God is he source of all goodness. The strength we require to lead noble life is called spiritual strength and God is the ultimate source of all strength to do good.

Prayer is not begging----- give me this, give me that. we want to do good but our mind is such that it gets distracted, so we pray for strength. Also if we know that beauty, talent, intelligence, strength, everything is gift from God, we will not become proud and arrogant. Prayer helps us to remove our ego.

So now we understand that when we pray, we derive spiritual strength, we dedicate our work to God and thus we remove our ego.

Who or What is God?

God is the energ behind everything. He is one and his powers are manifold.

We are one but many also! When we are listning we are the hearer; when we are seeing, the seer;  when singing, the singer; when joking, the joker! The  hearer, singer, seer, joker are not different. The power is one but the instruements are many. In same way God is one his expressions are manifold.

When we make a pot we are called pot maker, when we keep it we are the keeper and when we break it we are the breaker. God is the creator, maintainer and destroyer of the entire world.

Praying to God gves us power to follow our dharma...

Foundation of Dharma

1. Reverence for life

Everyone wants to live, no one wants to die, not even a little insect. Hence the dharma is to protect life and do all that is necessary for its sustenance. We can kill a living thing, but we cannot give it life, so dharma will be not to destroy life unnecessarily. The greatest dharma is compassion for living things.

2.   Respect for knowledge

No one likes to be fooled. Nobody knows everything. We all are ignorant about certain things and so we must try to impart the knowledge that we have. The more you give knowledge the more it will grow. When we give food to the hungry, the hunger is satisfied temporarily, but when you give knowledge it is for ever.

3.   Respect for Happiness

Every one wants to live and live happily. We have no right to destroy happiness of others Our dharma is to give happiness. It does not cost us anything to smile. Why keep smile a mile away?

4.  Integration

Dharma is which integrates, that which brings everyone together.

We may feel that to respect knowledge, respect happiness and bring about integration, are difficult things to do. Isn't there just one thing? The answer is LOVE. Where there is love the above four are included. When parents love their children, their first concern is for their safety, they send them to school for knowledge, they make them happy and always attempt to keep the family united.

The test of love is that we are concerned about the happiness of the loved ones and are always ready to serve them. Love is the essence of dharma. If there is no love, everything else loses its value. Love for god is called bhakti. Puja done without love will be of no value. If love is present, there is happiness in life.

Tuning the mind

When we want to hear a music programme on the radio, we have to tune the radio to correct station. If the radio is at a different wave length, there will be some noise but no music. Similarly when the teacher is speaking, if the students mind is tuned, then he will understand correctly what the teacher has said.

In life, preparation for anything takes a long time. To eat a meal it takes 15 minutes but to prepare it takes months. It starts when the seeds are sown, then harvested, marketed, brought and then the final preparation of cooking may take two hours. So the preparation of the game of life is also a long one. The actual game to be played is the last.

A human being as compared to animals has many specialities. One of them is speaking words and be able to communicate with language. If we know how to make proer use of words, then we can make friends, material wealth and immortality. Words can save our life, somebody's life. Unintelligent and indriscriminate use of words can invite death also. Word power is greater than weapon ower.

That is why it is said

On the tip of the tongue dwells Lakxmi

On the tip of the tongue are friends and relatives

By words alone one can become bound

By words alone one can invite death.

Thus by proper and right use of words we can earn money, friendship, relations, immortality or death.

Once someone asked Swami Chinmayananda how he got money to run such a big institution world wide. He answered, " Ancestoral property, Three inches of land, my tongue!" That is by his power of speech. When one speaks with great love, devotion, sincerity and service, and imparts knowledge with true feeling, the people come ad they bring everything else.

Nothing in the world is accomplished without effort. Physical effort is a must if you want to achieve anything in this world, Success before Work comes only in one place...dictionary...

You don't start digging the well, once the house has caught fire.

In life to be happy, we should not be dependent on so many things.

So in life we must speak good words, think properly, work hard and learn to be independent.

The Actual Game

Let us consider the game of cricket. There is a huge feild, with the pitch in the center. There are 3 stumps on either side..There is a single batsmen who has to face the bowler, there are other fielders, all of them trying to get the batsman out. The bowler bowls different kind of balls, the fielding goes on changing, there are thousands of spectators, some are cheering some are hostile....
Under such circumstances how can the batsman be successful?

1 He must be fearless, not to get scared by the bowler or the fielders.

2. He must know how to face all types of balls. If he knows how to face only 1 type of ball, then when a different type of ball is bowled, he gets out.

3.  He must be alert, otherwise he can be made out----stumped, run out etc.

4.  He must maintain his balance and not get excited and anxious especially when he is nearing 90 runs or he gets out.

5.  He must learn to face hostile crowd with courage and not get overpowered by the tactics of the opposite team.

6.  His behaviour must be perfect, because all the spectators in the stadium and TV are watching. One misbehaviour brings bad name to the player, team and the nation. He must not allow anyone to empower him, in any manner especially emotionally.

We now come to our life. Our feild may be limited, but in whichever feild we are working (home, school, office) there are many people who are trying to pull us down. It is a test. Many people encourage us.

We face different kind of bowling----various types of problems, family problems, social problems, financial problems etc. If we are specialist in one field e.g. a doctor.....he can solve medical problems but what about other problems.

Hence, whether it is loss of health, wealth or emotional disturbance, one must know how to face these problems. The problem is we try to face the world with our little bat----Our university degree. What is the bat with which we should play the game of life.... it is the bat of right discrimination (vivek)

Knowledge we may have but we have to know how and where to use that knowledge.

Discrimination is rare, the most uncommon thing in the world is common sense. Therefore we find that one particular degree does not help us in life. We must have the knowldge by which we can understand all types of situations so that we know what to do in different situations and make the best of it....

From a discourse by Swami Nithyananda ji

From a discourse by Swami Parmhansa Nithyananda

From childhood we are taught there is some purpose to life. We are made to run toward goals. The more we run and achieve, more successful we are considered. More speed more respect more rewards, but the more we run towards goals, the more we miss out on life.

We think I will be happy when I finish studies, when I have a job, when I marry, when I have kids, a house, a car, when kids grow up, when my responsibilities are over. By the time all this happens our being is so conditioned we can’t relax. The tension of running behind something has become part of our being; it has become part of our conditioning. After that resting will not be rest any more, it will not be relaxation any more, it will be loneliness. When we get rest at the end of our life we feel lonely because we are conditioned to run behind some thing, we are conditioned to live with something, we are conditioned to associate ourselves with some thing.

.Society wants you to run because only then you will be useful to it. A person  who runs for society by society will never experience peace, there is more  possibility of becoming mad or fall down dead one day.

I have to look deeply inside, even after I achieve everything I desired, am I happy as a person. Will I be able to rest? Will I be in bliss? Will I feel fulfilled?

If we measured our success on the scale of money, name and fame, how will it feel when we realize we cannot take anything with us to our next life. All the running about was in vain, we let all the beautiful moments slip by for some unknown future.

Life has no purpose but it has meaning. There is difference between purpose and meaning. Purpose is goal oriented, living itself is the meaning. There is no such thing as the end will be happy; the path should be equally happy and satisfying. We postpone joy, bliss and living to some future point.

Only a person who has deeply experienced himself, who rests in himself, who experiences inaction in action will be a happy person.

We should all be very selfish; this is the purpose of human birth. Selfish stand for self + wish. We came to realize the self. But due to ignorance we started associating self to the body; we started finding joy only in gratifying the five senses (eyes, ears, nose, mouth and skin). Now we only get joy by seeing, smelling, eating, drinking, talking, hearing and touching. We don’t know anything beyond sensory pleasures. The new motto of life seems to be “Eat, drink and be merry” This is very dangerous. Any excess always brings low energy, disease and unhappiness.

There should always be balance in everything.

Art Of managing people

Our success in life depends on people, whether we hold a small job, big job or just run our home. Our relationships with family, parents, children, siblings, boss, colleagues, subordinates, servants, sales men, neighbors, business associates will determine how happy, fulfilled, content or unhappy, discontent empty we will be. Remember that people are always always more important than things……

Its an illusion that I am well educated and have a great job now I do not need to work on my people skills, if this was true than why would so many people  attend people management classes.  Remember some of the most qualified and highly placed people do so, because the higher you go more important it becomes to deal and treat people right. If this was a small thing why would Corporates place so much importance on HR management and make their officers attend free people management courses.

Actually people management is very simple it just requires basic human qualities in a person….love, understanding, humility and compassion.

In the long run people will forget how beautiful you are, what beautiful and stylish clothes you wear, how educated and intelligent you are,  what post you hold, they will only remember how you made them feel. Did you make them feel loved, comfortable and important. Did you  listen to them with compassion, made them feel wanted. Could you take a back seat and let them shine and feel important. Could you truly feel happy if they wanted to do some thing from what you wanted to do. if you can do this people will always feel happy and comfortable in your company.

Some quotations

Attitude is a small thing which makes a big difference.

Love is the master key that opens the gates of happiness.
~ Oliver Wendell Holmes

You are the author of your own life's script. Whatever is written in there, is from your own doing. make sure it is a script worthy of reading.

Seek balance in your life, for from balance comes peace

Dream, for without dreams you have nothing to live for

Smell the roses, they may be gone tomorrow

Give, because it shows u care

Believe, for all things are possible if u believe

Be compassionate, for u may not be able to see why it hurts

When someone hurts you, do not condone the deed, but forgive the person

Do not let your thoughts and actions differ. It will not only confuse you but many others who believe in you

Be grateful to the people who make you happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom

Bless, and the blessing would multiply before it returns to you

Choose, do not just accept the lemons life throws at you

The Stone

The Stone

"There was once a wise woman traveling in the mountains who found a precious stone in a stream. The next day she met another traveler who was hungry, and she opened her bag to share her food. The hungry traveler saw the precious stone and asked if she might give it to him. She did so without hesitation. The traveler left, rejoicing in his good fortune. He knew the stone was worth enough to give him security for a lifetime, but a few days later he came back to return the stone to the woman who had given it to him. 'I've been thinking," he said, "I know how valuable the stone is, but I'm giving it back in the hope that you can give me something much more precious. I want you to give me what you have within you that enabled you to give me the stone.

Sometimes in our continual drive to get ahead we forget that the things we gather around us, no matter how precious they might seem, pale in comparison to the love and light we hold within.

May you always recognize that what is truly precious is not to be found in the outer world, but inside of you.

Just A Thought

"Better to LOVE than seek love: Better to UNDERSTAND than be understood: Better to GIVE than take: Better to RESPECT others than demand to be respected: Better to let others SHINE and be able to take a back seat: Better to FORGIVE and FORGET and start afresh. One who can do so is not a loser but the real winner, he is not a doormat but a MASTER........Renuka "

Transcending the ego

    Transcending the Ego

Every one has to find solutions to their abnormalities. We all are normal people with some abnormalities. These abnormalities may be hurting to us or others.... in fact mostly to both. First step is to recognize them. The stronger you are as a person , the higher your self esteem ,quicker  you will admit them and then recognising the damage they can cause to your personality, reputation and relationships quickly you will try to resolve them.

First step is to recognize them , second is to treat them. If you can by yourself  good if not there are enough councellors.

The more ego one has the more difficult it is to admit and seek help. We prefer to cling to them thinking to change is weakness...Infact its the otherway round only the strong can change...Satsang or to be with wise people teaches this only...The art of living, its nothing removed from the world...One is not to renounce anything only the ego...Ego is the source of all pain and when we choose to cling to ego we choose to cling to pain. Its like garbage, the sooner we throw it away the better it is. Satsang brings peace because the guru tells us how to transcend the ego...We go there for nothing else but step by step to transcend the ego...Its both .... most difficult thing and also the easiest (who wants to cling to garbage and pain)....

We think we will become like doormats if we don't have ego, its the other way round one becomes powerful beyond measure when there is no ego. Everyone finds his company soothing and comforting, people start being attracted to such a soul.
Anger, not expressing, not letting go, holding grudges, not forgiving, stubborness, bitterness, suppression, expectations, hurting language is all ego. We should let it go as soon as possible if we want to be happy and peaceful and let others be so. When we hold fire its going to burn us foremost, similarly anger is going to burn all our wisdom fibres and harm us before harming anyone else. we can say the same thing  in a pleasant manner.

When some one meets us one should leave  a happier person, silently sending blessings our way. Collect these blessings  like treasure in your deposit box,  because when nothing else works blessings do.

Have a happy smiley day. Blosson like a rose,Spread your fragrance around  and let people feel blessed to have crossed you way.Take charge of your life and your emotions.
